Consciousness Might Be a Result of Basic Physics, Say Researchers

Consciousness Might Be a Result of Basic Physics, Say Researchers Why is my awareness here, while yours is over there? Why is the universe split in two for each of us, into a subject and an infinity of objects? How is each of us our own center of experience, receiving information about the rest of the world out there?  Why are some things conscious  and others apparently not? Is a rat conscious? A gnat? A bacterium? These questions are all aspects of the ancient "mind-body problem," which asks, essentially: What is the relationship between mind and matter? It's resisted a generally satisfying conclusion for thousands of years. The mind-body problem enjoyed a major rebranding over the last two decades. Now it's generally known as the "hard problem" of consciousness, after  philosopher David Chalmers coined this term in a  now classic paper and further explored it in his 1996 book, " The Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory

Could consciousness all come down to the way things vibrate?

What do synchronized vibrations add to the mind/body question? Why is my awareness here, while yours is over there? Will artificial intelligence become conscious?

What's the link between technology and Consciousness Forget about today’s  modest incremental advances  in artificial intelligence, such as the increasing abilities of cars to  drive themselves . Waiting in the wings might be a  groundbreaking development : a machine that is aware of itself and its surroundings, and that could take in and process massive amounts of data in real time. It could be sent on dangerous missions, into space or combat. In addition to driving people around, it might be able to cook, clean, do laundry – and even keep humans company when other people aren’t nearby. A particularly advanced set of machines could  replace humans  at literally all jobs. That would save humanity from workaday drudgery, but it would also  shake many societal foundations . A life of no work and only play may turn out to be a  dystopia . Conscious machines would also raise  troubling legal and ethical problems . Would a conscious machine be a “person” under law and be liabl

Consciousness and Quantum Mind

Answering a question whether Consciousness has some underlying quantum basis, some thoughts which occurred to me: Thank you for this important and fundamental question, which has perhaps deep connotations with not just the mind, but with the very essence of the Universe as well. During my twenties and all the way till the end of my twenties and going into graduate studies, I was intrigued with consciousness and both quantum mechanics. I used to think while being an undergraduate student in physics if there were some fields emanating in our brain which correlated with or were the underlying basis of consciousness. During graduate studies and studying quantum mechanics, though I was fully occupied in particle physics, my specialization, it still intrigued if consciousness was a quantum mechanical effect. Although during my undergraduate studies I did not know what other people said about consciousness, but I even made a theory of my own about it, with some biological basis, startin

It time for science to accept consciousness

Although it takes place outside the headlines, even those that deal with science, a heated debate is occurring about mind and matter. On onside is a camp of so-called physicalists, formerly known as materialists, who hold fast to the assumption that any and all phenomena in nature can be reduced to physical processes and the interaction of objects (atoms, subatomic particles, etc.) --these for the building blocks of the universe. On the other side is no single camp but a mixed assortment of skeptics who hold that at least one natural phenomenon--the human mind--cannot be explained physically. When one explanation (the physicalist) is supported by the weight of highly successful theories in physics, biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience, and the other side has no accepted theory on its side, the debate seems totally unequal. But in David versus Goliath battles, be careful of rooting for Goliath. The possibility of a science of consciousness, which would involve a thorough explan

Human energy structure and consciousness

Man is the most mysterious creature on Earth. The human body seems to be the perfect bio-machine which performs various functions, both external and internal. We move in the three-dimensional space, perform various activities; accept solutions, process information and communicate. However, there is something that has not yet been registered by the devices, but is clearly felt by humans. We are talking about the invisible and finest part of the human being, which is not seen by the eye – the energy structure of man.
